EAL Symposium
04 September, 2017
Two VSL staff members, Voula MacKenzie and Nathan Chong, recently presented at a Bastow Institute of Education symposium on digital technology in language education. The VSL Virtual EAL New Arrivals program, uses video conferencing to support relatively isolated students who are learning English as an additional language. Many families from non-English speaking countries have been placed in rural Victorian towns. This has been generally very successful as the new families contribute to the local communities and the local economy. These new families, from such different cultural backgrounds, have been well accepted and supported by their school communities. In many country schools, there are not enough EAL students to justify a specialist EAL teacher and there is no English Language Centre they can access. How do we solve that problem? Well, this is where digital technology comes in.
