Being Bilingual
04 September, 2017
VSL Area Manager Antonella Cicero , recently gave a presentation at Blackburn English Language School to recently arrived migrants from Burma, Arabic and Persian speaking countries and Korea. The main focus of the presentation was on the importance of children maintaining their mother tongue whilst learning English. There has been extensive research conducted highlighting the advantages of being bilingual. It has been proven that bilingual students have a better understanding of English language structures, stronger literacy in both languages and increased analytical and thinking skills. The presentation was well received by the parents, appreciating the support that they receive from the VSL. The VSL would also like to thank the Migrant Information Centre in Box Hill and their settlement support workers for liaising with the VSL and assisting in the promotion of our language programs.
