Chiriti Thiruvizha - Tamil New Year
29 May, 2018
On Saturday 19 May, the Tamilar Inc, a not-for-profit, apolitical, secular community organisation, held the Tamil New Year Celebration at the Collingwood Town Hall. The VSL is leading the nation in supporting the teaching of Indian languages. The first language was Hindi and was introduced at the Brunswick Centre 31 years ago. Since then we have added Punjabi, Malayalam, Urdu, Tamil and others. We introduced Tamil initially at the Werribee Centre in 2012, at Lalor in 2014, At the Roxburgh Centre in 2016 and at Creekside College in Caroline Springs in 2017. This has been a real team effort involving theTamil community, VSL leadership and the respective Area Managers. The New Year function was also attended by Cr Daniel Nguyen (Mayor of the City of Yarra), Mrs Vijaya Vaidyanath (CEO of the City of Yarra) and other notable guests. The President of the Association, Mr Jayaram Nadar expressed his appreciation of the role the VSL has played. He also acknowledged the VSL support in the printing of six Tamil textbooks, prepared by Mrs Deepa Ganesan and a team of people. The occasion was used to launch the publications. Congratulations to all involved.
