Turkish Activities at Keilor
29 August, 2019
The Turkish parents, students and teachers met at Keilor Downs VSL Centre on Saturday 3rd/8/2019 hosted by the Area Manager Sadik Cagdas. There were a number of items for discussion, such as increasing student engagement and outcomes, increasing student enrolment and attendance, as well as the importance of studying Turkish at VSL Centres – which enables students to gain extra points towards their ATAR for many University courses. Furthermore, Mr. Cagdas emphasized the importance of the partnership between parents and the school and encouraged parents to involve in their students’ learning and the school wide activities intended for the future. Nine parents volunteered to form the Turkish parents’ Committee. The committee decided to meet regularly to work closely with the Keilor Downs VSL Centre in planning extra-curricular activities such as the music workshop for students where the knowledge of language and culture, through music, is integrated into student programs.

Keilor Downs Turkish Teacher Hediye Guven (a popular musician both in Turkey and Melbourne), together with her partner, guitarist Tolga Tumay, and VSL students sang Veysel’s “Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim” (I am on a long and narrow road). The words to the song (including the use of figurative language) were explored and analysed with students during the workshop. Veysel’s biography was also discussed. Area Manager Sadik Cagdas has informed everyone that various activities and engaging strategies for students will continue to be adopted throughout our programs at VSL and that such activities and concerts will be open to the Turkish community to attend.
