Italian Poetry Recital
27 October, 2017
The Dante Alighieri Society promotes the Italian culture and language around the world and every year it runs many different competitions for Primary and Secondary school students . Our VSL students from Carwatha College participate regularly in the various competitions, thus improving their knowledge and their self-confidence in speaking and writing in Italian. Over the years, VSL Carwatha students have won many prizes at the various year levels , in competitions such as reciting a poem, writing an original poem or writing a speech. The Poetry Recitation Competition presents secondary school students in Years 9-12 with the opportunity to learn and recite an Italian poem - ranging from excerpts of Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia to those of modern and contemporary Italian poets. In particular, reciting Dante's excerpts by heart requires the ability to speak the Italian spoken during the 13th century and this is certainly a big challenge for young students. For our Carwatha College students, participating in these competitions, and winning many of them, has been a great way of enhancing their vocabulary and grammar knowledge. It has also encouraged them to improve their speaking skills, especially in front of the public; it has allowed them to discover the names of famous literary works in Italian history and finally, it has supported their skills in memorising large texts. At Carwatha College, we always encourage our students to participate in these competitions every year with enthusiasm and excitement. Teacher: Dr Katia Dell’Anna
