Connecting to Community
13 November, 2017
The Victorian educational frameworks are based around six key principles, one of which requires strong connection to community: Learning connects strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom. The VSL is a very community oriented school and to see how this principle is applied we take a quick look at how the Bulgarian faculty at Glen Waverley enacts it.
Since their establishment in 2015, every year on the 24 May, the Bulgarian classes take central part in the community’s annual celebrations honouring the Cyrillic Alphabet and the Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture. Weaving a wreath of fresh flowers for the patrons of the Bulgarian community, presenting a concert to the community and actively participating in all ceremonies held on the day, have become a tradition for all students and their families.
Reaching out to the community in times, when the Bulgarian National and Liberation Day- 3rd March is celebrated, provides the students with opportunities to broaden their knowledge in history and develop a rich view of practice, including social and ethical issues.
Participating in end of year activities and performing stories, songs and poems in front of a Bulgarian speaking audience encourages skills for comparison and evaluation of traditional customs, relevant to the Bulgarian and the Australian holiday calendars.
Visiting SBS Radio and having our interviews with the Bulgarian Program Presenter, Filli Ladgman, broadcast makes us understand how language can be used for media purposes and better connects us to the local and the broader community.
Performing at concerts of touring famous Bulgarian folklore artists deepens our understanding of how culture influences language. Our last performance is dated from October 1, 2017 when singer Dessie Dobreva delivered a memorable concert for the community.
In these and other ways we hope to strongly connect to our community.
